Ok here is my problem.
1984 F-150 with a 351W
4V Edelbrock 600cfm carb.
Anyhow as i was going up the street, i stepped into it a little then
the engine backfires like crazy. When i take the gas off it stops backfiring. When i stepped into it it backfired again.
THen the engine cut out.
I coasted down the road and pulled off to the side then
I go to start it and nothing.
I can smell gas when i try to start it.
It turns over, only to backfire out the carb then die again.
Any ideas?
Just another thought, but check the oil level. If it's too high, the float in your carb may be stuck causing it to flood dumping raw fuel into your engine.
Na thats not it. Im sure of it. Just changed the oil and put in 1/2 quart less than max.
But it always would jump time and backfire out of the exhaust at higher RPM'S.
At higher RPM's in lower gear it never backfired until it rev's down to about 2k RPM, then it pops like crazy
No, when I said that if the oil level is too high I meant that if it does read too high, then it could be gas mixed in with oil causing it to give you a false reading on the dipstick.
Hmmm, i just checked it. It seems fine on the dipstick. Its been cold for about 2 hours now. Tho its rather thin...
Anyhow the distributor won't line up to correct timing.
I try to move it to re-align the timing and it wont allign perfect... about 3 or 4 degrees off at best.
