my 96 is display some odd behavior as of late: when i press down on the gas, the pedal stays down for 5-6 seconds...this makes stop and go traffic in the morning very interesting! if i stomp the pedal real fast it will go back to original position. so what's the deal? from the past couple of week i've observed that it seems to happen more in the cooler mornings...TPS sensor? there's no check engine so i thought that ruled that out....sprayed some lube on the throttle cable too..no luck.
any ideas? this is an annoying problem right now but as rain/snow come it'll become a dangerous problem. any help appreciated!
Do a search thru these forums for TPS. You should be able to find some threads describing testing procedures with a volt meter. Basically you probe the back of the TPS and verify its showing the right voltages at various positions. Sorry I do not know these voltages off the top of my head. Honestly, I think you're starting in the right direction with the TPS.
The TPS sensor merely reports to the EEC where the pedal is at a given moment.
Sounds like your pedal is sticking, my 93 crewcab's pedal does that quite often actually.
I spray the linkage end, springs, and levers on the throttle body and 99% of the time that solves the problem. If it helps but doens't completely eliminate it, I take the throttle cable off the engine and gas pedal, hold it vertically, and dribble a graphite based lubricant down the wire into the sheath, then slide the wire in and out a bunch of times, and keep repeating until the lubricant starts to drip out the bottom. Then reinstall the cable and I don't have to think about it for a few years.
