My Dad recently GAVE me his very original 65 F250. Great old truck! Man, they made 'em outa steel in those days.

Here's what I know so far. 352, 4 speed (granny low for pullin' trees), some kind of PTO (power take off) on the trans, Dana 60 rear end.

Non original equipment is 2 nicely plumbed 15 gal sidetanks so it carries 46 gals of gas. It needs it too!

What it really needs is a paintjob but first I'll need some window rubber and the gas tank donut. Anybody know a good source?

Any options on gearing for that Dana 60?

Do I really wanna go 75 with a twin I beam? LOL!

Bill

Bill sounds like you got a great heavy duty truck there. That truck was a special order with the pto.

You can find a 75/76 with a 360 in it and harvest the parts and you can put power steering and disc brakes on the old truck, maybe a C-6 if you don't need all that tranny.

What do you mean run 75, I will run mine on past 100 mph with confidence in the truck.

100 mph? LOL! Maybe my Twin I Beams are a little loose!

It's a fine old truck tho. Definitely a keeper. One thing about the 4 speed and steering it has now is I don't have to worry about the wife borrowing it.
You guys might find this good for a laugh. My Dad was the 2nd owner and between the 2 of them they always kept a camper on it. So you'd think I need a tailgate? No. They saved it since 1965! It's perfect!

Could definitely use a taller rear gear tho. I've been cruisin' the archives and a 9 inch swap for the Dana seems to be common but I'd like to keep the heavy 8 bolt axles on it. I suppose original or not is a common dilemna around here. Modern convenience or the nostalgia?
Richmond Gear has gear sets for the Dana but I think they're for the drag racers. Nuthin' below 3.50.

John, I spotted a pic of your truck at the Slick 60 Club site? Looked real nice. What kinda power train you runnin' to get a 100 out of it?

I have a F-100 and it has the 4 speed with the granny and the 60 rear end. I have been looking into getting a "taller" rear end,(lower number). That rear end had a ratio of 3.73 to 1. Mine is 4.10 to 1 which makes 50 mph seem like 90 mph.

Bill, I have a 65' F-250 and I changed the rear ratio from 4:10 to 3:54, that's the lowest I could find for that year Dana rear end.I also looked at swaping out the whole unit, but found that spring perches and shock mounts changed through the years and I had a hard time finding a good donor. With the 3:54 rear I can cruise at 60 mph at about 2,400 rpm.
BTW anyone know a good source for the spedo gear in the trans.?
Mine is a little off since I've changed rears. I have the 4-speed granny low.

Where did your dad get these tanks? I want to do something similar on my '65 F-350.

ps what size tires are you running? My truck has the same trans and 4.88 gears, and turns 3025 rpm at 60 mph (235-85R16 tires).

Bill, I have a warmed up 352, C6 and 2.75 rears. I wouldn't be afraid to speculate that it would hit 130 or better. It has plenty left at 100 mph. I aint itching to find out though.

I love my wifes husband.

Bill.
Get all the rubber parts (and others too) you need from Dennis Carpenter Reproductions 1-800-476-9653 . The catalog for your truck is only $3 and is well worth the money. You can also check LMC Trucks, Sacramento Vintage Ford for other hard to find parts, and John Wilkerson has a buddy at one of the better parts shops in North Carolina. I think it is Carolina Classics. I'll bet he will give you the name and number
Glad to have you in the fraternity.

Artskyd, 3.54 sounds like a decent ratio in the Dana. I guess I'm comparing with a Chevy work van I have that was higher than I liked at 3.42. But that's with 235/75/15's. The old Ford has 16.5's on the back mounted on what my Dad calls "duplex" rims. Other than being kinda wide they look like regular 8 lug jobs to me.
The front has 16" wheels but may not be original? All big bias tires BTW. I hear 16" radials are way to go.

Charles, I have no idea where the saddle tanks came from. I would guess a small custom shop run by a guy who knew what he was doing. It's a real clean installation. The valve to switch between the 3 tanks is on the floor near the back of the cab on the driver's side where it's easy to reach. Not only is it clearly labeled there's a switch on the dash to light the general area up so you can see to switch the tanks on the fly at night! LOL! It's a cool truck. I like it a lot.

Good tip from John on the front discs too. Them drum brakes remind of the days when I was learning to drive. When I got in a car with "Power Brakes" I used to think they were too touchy. You just need to use some leg on them drums! LOL! Discs would be better tho. I'll keep an eye out for a donor for sure.
