Irecently bought a 62 flareside f100 the engine has been replaced with a 300 6cyl. and a 3 speed floorshift rather than a 3 on the tree i would like to hear your opinion on this setup it also has a 9 inch rear end. Basically i want as much power as that old 300 can muster what is your advice and what should i expect . Ofcourse my wife is watching my budget all help much appreciated.
I have to admit that I really like the 300-6 engine. How well it works for you depends on what you want it to do. The straight six in general is a low revving high torque engine perfect for truck applications. It is also fuel efficient and extremely easy to work on. As far as performance parts go, Clifford performance ( www.cliffordperformance.com) is a good place to start looking. They have the normal carb, cam, header type parts. Offenhauser makes a dual plane intake manifold for this application which is maybe a better choice, and I think I've seen headers in the JCWhitnet catalog.
I had 300 Six's in several years. They have the virtues of good Torque, Low rev's, good fuel milage, long lifeline, reliablilty and easy maintenance.
Anything you do with it, other than normal day to day driving, is going to be abuse.
I always wanted an automatic for mine, and never found out which one would fit. That was before this group though, someone might know the answer.
Just Drive it. If you change anything, get the cab a lot quieter. I had a lot of changes in mind back then, but...

John, your 300cid is one fine engine! The intake/
exhaust manifold and carb from an '83 works well on mine. The outlet on the exhaust is 2 1/2" which
allows a little better breathing. The carb seems to help quite a bit at top end. I had to replace the vibration dampener and and balance the flywheel to smooth mine out, but what a difference. I've stuck with fomoco stuff because
it all works right on a basically stock engine.
BTW, my 300 likes Autolite #124 "commercial duty"
plugs better than anything else I've tried.
I have a 263 engine. Doesn't seem to be too many of those. I rebuilt it and it runs great. but I have never gotten it to do better than 8-9 mpg. I realize gas mileage isn't the point of these old trucks, but I don't think that it is 'burning' all the fuel, and that can take a toll on the engine, scouring the cyl. walls, fouling plugs.
It is 1 barrel carb. Holly and is only 4 years old. Not sure of the jet, but it is pretty small.
my 66 had a 300 and a 3speed with overdrive from a 78 F150 and 3.25 gears. It would get 22 MPG on the highway. This is what I was driving when I got my last speeding ticket. The 6 cylinder has so much low end torque that it would pull my trailer better than my 86 F150 with a fuel injected 302 and automatic. This was all possible because of the overdrive, I think. You can also get exhaust manifolds from a EFI 300 and have duals. Ford split the manifold to run 2 converters.
