Is it possible to install a rear axle assembly ABOVE the rear springs in my 1956 F-100? I realize that the original assembly won't work because the mounting pads are on top, but can Dana rear ends with the spring pads on the bottom be installed above the springs? Someone MUST have done this already or found out why it can't be done. Any information would be appreciated.
The issue that you have to check is spring travel. IMHO you need about 3 inches of suspension travel for load/road bumps between the top of the axle and the bottom of the frame after locating the axle on top of the springs (with the truck fully assembled). I did not have enough on my F-1 when I tried it.
The second clearance you need to check is top of rear end to bottom of bed, again IMHO you should have about 3 inches minimum. My F-1 was also close in this area.
