nut1605: there's about as many opinions on "what oil" as there are members here! In your part of the country I'd go with a diesel oil (CI-4 rated) in a 15w 40 weight. I use Chevron Delo 400, but others have there own favorites. I worked at Chevron and knew the head chemist that designed our oil's add-pac, so I'm partial to what I "know".
I'll be switching to the new CJ-4 rated oil when it's available...
Thanks for the advice. I was thinking I should be using 15W-40. I have noticed a lot of auto parts stores around here carry Delo and Rotella. My grandpa has used Rotella in his 97 7.3L and has never had any problems, so Im not sure which one to go with.
Larryjj....I love my truck. I can't wait to hook a boat or something up to it and see how it runs!
Use any diesel rated oil with the current CI4+ API certification. It can either be 15W-40 dino or 5W-40 synthetic. There is a new oil spec, CJ4 that is due out on 10/16, but either will do just great for you. Any major brand of oil with CI4+ (current rating) is all that you need.
Just choose any name brand and enjoy. Just use a Motorcraft, Fram or Racor oil filter as not to loose oil pressure upon shutdown (They are all made by Racor and fit better than any other brand)!!!
Well that just ain't right. I was on a roll, either locking threads or asking them to be locked, this morning. Now you guys come along and play nice.
Lock & Roll......
Here I am..... Keith..... lets play....
I know a friend, of a friend that can get you a great price (dealer cost) on brand "A" oil. If you use their brand "A" oil filter, you can go 100,000 miles on the same oil and filter. Brand "A" will warrenty your motor, door locks, air intake and refund beer money if you have a problem.
I am not selling brand "A" oil, just letting you know that "I think it is API certified and a friend, of a friend's, uncle used it in his 1950 Desoto and Packard with great results!!!
By the way... ever notice that everyone sells it for "dealer cost"... so how does anyone make money... oh, that's right... it is so overpriced that they can!!
nut1605: Will this be your 1st oil change? You didn't ask the "when should I do my 1st oil change" question, but if it is your 1st one, there are a number of opinions on when to do it. Quite a few folks that change it early the 1st time just to get the Ford 10w 30 (aka: "water") out of there. I did my 1st change at 1K miles and will do another probably at 3K, as just an example.
Don't nobody shoot me, it's just what I decided to do....
