4.2l V-8

How common is the 4.2L v-8? This is also the 255cid isn't it? And how good are these engines?

Not common. It's the same block as the 302 but it has a smaller bore and as a consequence has smaller valves. Valves on most heads from 289's and 302's won't clear the walls of the 255, so you'd have to stick with the stock heads. Personally, with the high price of gas, I'd consider the 255 a pretty good candidate for a economy engine. Best of both worlds.

Thanks, the truck seems to have decent power and does get fairly good mileage, a tune up will help even more I'm sure.

*take this as a guide, but MAY not be 100% accurate, the book its taken from has a couple 'typos' (wrong info)*

From George Reid's "Ford: High Performance Engine Parts Interchange" book:

255 info:
Bore x Stroke: 3.68" x 3.00"
Valve size-
-Intake: 1.78"
-Exhaust: 1.45"
Horsepower: 115-120@ 3400-3800rpm
Torque: 194-205 @2200-2600rpm
Rocker Ratio: 1.73:1, bolt/fulcrum non-adjustable
Compression: 8.2:1
built 1980-1982.

Everything else is basically 302 equipment.

They were common in the Fairmont and LTD II. They got used more in the fleet vehicles than anything (The city of of Columbus OH had many of them).
