53 cowl vent

I know this has been discussed before, but I can't seem to locate it. I want to permanently close my cowl vent. I have seen many at shows that were welded shut and looked pretty good. My question would be, do you use the original vent lid and make a sheetmetal patch to fill the gaps, or do you use a full patch?
Thanks, Jeff

I used the original cowl vent. I cut the back stuff off of it and used rod to fill the gaps to the cowl.

Thanks Randy. How did you fill the gap at the front? Looks like you would have to use a narrow strip of metal there.

I've seen some just welded shut and the gaps filled with bondo. They crack out and look really bad pretty soon.

I haven't looked real close at how mine is made, but I thought there was a big gap to fill. If so, you should probably use a metal strip of some kind.

Without AC in mine, the cowl vent is nice to have operational. So far it does not leak.

Jeff - Yes, that's exactly what I used.

The cowl vent wanted to lay flatter than the shape it should take. So, I cut about three strips of sheet metal to the height of the gap from cowl to the underside of the vent lid. I wedged the strips into the gap to hold the cowl vent to the shape, then faced the vent edge with another strip. It's not filled yet, but it looks pretty good.

Looking good Randy! Someday I need to learn to weld sheet metal like that.
