After almost 2 years into a frame off restoration of my 1977 F100 2 WD Flareside, I'm at the point of preparing the 351M I have to go in it. My initial intent was to keep the truck as original as possible but finding it difficult to avoid the temptation of a little performance with a mild steet cam, 4BL intake, 600cfm carb and headers. I'm curious to hear what others have done and how/if they would do things different?
I'm in the same boat. If nothing else, I plan on installing a zero degree timing set before reinstalling the front clip. But pre-winter yard work is occupying all my time.
how about turning your 351m into the '71 version of the 400. You would have the same stock look with 2v carb etc but would be pulling about 270hp and 400ft lbs.
they look the same on the outside...you'd have to measure the stroke to tell the diff.
It would include a crank which is fairly cheap, use the same rods, badger flattop pistons (150--200) delivered, straight up timing and your there. Add an inexpensive cam of your choice or go a bit more with a comp cams dual duration for a bit more poop.
Or then add the performer intake/carb and headers and your about 320hp/420+ ftlbs. but off course look a bit prouder than stock when you open the hood!
You will get better economy from the '71 400 than any 351m build- arguably-
I've owned a couple, three 351m and would go 400 w/o reservation and am confident that my build would be more efficient at the pump as well.
