I got my last TC from Precission Industries. I would stay away from Ford or Jasper for the rebuild. Depends on your budget as to what you can afford. I think some of our sponsors have good rebuilds.
I would definitely stay away from the Ford reman. As for the Jasper, I disagree. I have put in 15 or so Jaspers and only one has come back. They sent us a replacement no problem. I know of a tranny man that is about an hour north of me that rebuilds e4ods/4r100s and puts a $650 tc in and he says he has yet to have one come back. Not sure where he gets them. He claims he has built 25 or so this year and not one has failed. I think he gets the tc from TCI, but not sure.
They're a long way from you, but I had good luck with Transmission Exchange in Portland OR. I use the Tow Matirx E4OD with a billet converter. Their website is www.txchange.com
I don't reccomend Jasper because they rebuild stock. I don't think you can get a custom rebuild from them. So you end up with the stock valves and the aluminum planet to start with. If you tow all the time they will not hold together. If all you do is drive around with an empty bed, you can probably use most of them. If you work it hard you have to invest some money and get rid of the crappy parts. The stock trans is trash for working.
I have seen with my own eyes that a Jasper will infact hold up. I have put a Jasper in two seperate F-350"s. These trucks are used by the local co-op to spray crops. They have super swampers on them and they carry a 500 gallon tank on them. I did one two years ago and the other this spring and neither has had a problem. I have also put a Jasper in a 99 F-250 SC SD 7.3l, it went thru 3 Ford remans and they said don't come back. We put in the Jasper, and it has not been back. This guy used his truck like a semi. That was back in Feb.
I gave my opinion based on my experience. Jasper didn't last in my trucks. I am glad they lasted for others. But I wouldn't use one again.
jimkidd, it might be a good idea for you to go to a good trans shop and look at the parts and potential problems and decide if you wants a stock trans or not. In your 96 F250 it might be fine. My trucks weigh 14K plus. And they tow 12K more with it almost all the time. When we are in the hills all day the stock trans falls apart. I pay $1,100 for the TC and an additional $2,600 for the rebuild. I get the best parts I can including a new pump. I get a big cooler and use synthetic fluid. It's the only way I can keep the trucks on the road. If your truck doesn't work like that, you might be fine with a stock trans. But do your homework before you write a check.
I agree that they don't all hold up. I hope I didn't come off wrong, but we've had good luck with them. We don't even use Ford e4od/4r100 remans at all anymore. I would also suggest doing some research as to what is done by each company building a reman. My appologies to Trike1946 if you felt I was being a *****, sorry.
I do work my trucks. They're trucks. I have cars also but they are for different things. I believe GVWR translates to what I can get going and safely stop at any given speed. That's what trailer brakes are for. I don't have a problem spending $4,000 for a tranny and torque converter... if it's worth it. Brian's Truck Shop will guarantee a transmission for as long as you own a the vehicle... for $3,900. What are some opinions?
I would find out what exactly he puts in the tranny for parts. If everything seems on the up, then I would go with him. I would definitely make sure he backflushes the radiator. This is a problem area on all vehicles. If the tc starts to come apart it will plug the cooler.
I have no personal experience with Brian's but I hear good things about them. And the guarantee sounds great. fordfaninIL is right about the cooler. Make sure it is clean.
this is all great info. I have a question about the torque converter locking and unlocking while pull 4600 lb (flat bed trailer and 3 4wheelers). trying to keep the speed at about 65 mph's in o.d. any input would be appriciated.
If you are pulling on flat land, then leave it in od. If you are pulling hills, then you should turn od off. If the tranny is constantly shifting in and out of od you will overheat the tranny.
