Heater core

I think I'm starting to get a little "sweet smell" in my truck and I have a suspision that the heater core is starting to go. I'm going to get a few prices before I decide if I'm going to give it a shot or pay to have it done. What I'm wondering is if I should have the evaporator done at the same time? Blend door motor too? Truck is a '97 Ext cab 4.6L 4x4. w/87k. Thanks.

That is very common and a big job. If you do a search you will see a ton of info. One guy (I dunno if it was this site or another one) even compiled a MS Word doc. I have it downloaded but computer crashed and I lost it . I will look around for it again because I to need to do the HC soon in my 97F150. You need a special tool for the heater hose connections and the whole dash has to come out. They say figure on ~10 hrs for 1st timer.
