the guy i bought my 53 f-100 from says the motor is a 279 out of a firetruck with 3000 hours on it. is this a odd ball? i most likely won't use it.

There was a 279 OHV V8 in 53 that was used in P-350 Parcel Delivery Vans. The Ford Parts Catalog doesn't show Fire Trucks, but, that doesn't mean that engine wasn't used in one. The 279 definitely did not come in a F100.

Sounds like a candidate for a nice 302!

The only real way to tell is to get casting numbers off your engine. Post em here and many members will help you out.

That engine was used in the F-700 and F-800 trucks. It was also used in the Lincoln cars from that time. It's rated at 145 HP @ 3800 RPM and 244 ft.lbs @ 19-2100 RPM. If it is in good running condition, I'd keep it as it is different from the belly button bow tie engines.
