Sorry DUMB question

Why are 4.6/5.4 called Modular motors? do the parts fit larger or smaller engines to?

The 4.6 is almost the same thing as the 5.4. The heads interchange, etc, but the block has a higher "deck" for the 5.4. I think the rods are the same also.

The 6.8 V10 is the same thing as the 5.4 with two extra cylinders. Rods and pistons are the same.

http://www.fordracingparts.com/download/charts/217.pdf 4.6 rods are 4.6 specific (5.933"). 5.4/6.8 are the same (6.6573")...all use the same pistons.
