i just bought a 96 f250 with a 351w drove it for 2 days and then my oil press fell off to right below the n from right iin the middle i was wondering how accurate these gauges are i want to put a mech gauge in but i cant get at the stock location with out taking off the ps and ac is there any other place were the guage can go thanks
It could be a problem with the gauge itself. Short the oil pressure sender wire to ground and observe the position of the gauge (it should go somewhere in the middle of normal). If it is still low, the problem is in the wiring or the gauge.
My Oil Pressure is a bit skitzophrenic itself, especially during the winter months. Ill be driving along and one minute its on normal and the next it will be back down before the N, just like first discribed! I figured that it was probably more of a guage issue then anything. Even with the drop its always technically in the Normal range so I figure its okay. I always make sure the good ol 5.0 is good on oil, specially with its slightly leaky oil pan, uggh.
Oh really? Oh man now youve got me nervous! Well it hasnt done that for a long time now, its been staying pretty steady right in the middle. If it starts to act up again I will defiantly check it out.

do you use motorcraft oil filters? if not switch.
what oil do you use and how often do you change it?
maybe try to run some cleaner through the engine next oil change.
but until you use mech gauge you will still never know for sure.
Does the engine make any noises on a cold start up or is there rod knock when it's hot? Lower oil pressures on an SBF is no big deal, they will run for years like that as long as you change the oil on a regular basis and use a Motorcraft oil filter. My old 88 5.0 has sqaut for oil pressure at idle when it's warmed up, I told my old man this when he wanted to buy it from me when I bought the 96. It's been like that for 4 years now and it still runs like a champ.
I work on big rigs for a living, I see lots of different diesels with over 1,000,000km's on them before a rebuild. You would not believe how well some of these run with zip for oil pressure. We just rebuilt one this week with 1,300,000km on it and there was still cross hatch showing in the liners!
Unless you have noises I wouldn't worry too much, put a mechanical gauge in it to see what's up.
Sorry to thread hijack, but, have you or anyone else here had problems running something other than Motorcraft. I been running Wix on my 94 FSB with 128,XXX miles on it for quite sometime without issue. If theres a good enough reason I would switch though.
Ah yes, fubar a few things myself from time to time....Try an easy out or some Irwin LH extractors. I use them at work for stripped nipples and such, they work awesome.
