Air Box Mod

Is anyone willing to admit they opened up the Air flow by removing a piece or drilling holes in the flap directly in front of the air horn on the air box?

This mod would appear to force air into the filter yet be far enought back to keep rain or water out.

Any free flow systems remove this piece entirely?

I think it's Fiberglass or a plastic composite.

Do a search for ZooDad Mod. LOTS of people have done it. I have an open element filter and removed a large chunk of it for more air. When I race at the drags I even take out the drivers side headlight for even more air. I've never had a problem with water getting to it either.

It is called the "zoodad" mod.

Do a search and there are many opinions... for and against it.

The stock motor can suck all it wants and will operate fine with the two intake tubes that get air from the fender well and from behind the radiator support.

I vote for not doing it... but you'll get 50% for and 50% against... just do the search for "Zoodad" and make up your own mind on what you want to do.

Good luck,

I drilled my Zoodad hole slightly below the filter intake with the theory that air will still be able to flow in but rain water, being heavier than air, will not enter the filter. So far so good.

Not only did I do the Zoodad, but also run with out the front "snout" on the airbox. And yes I am aware of the "hot" underhood air temps. Not that big of a deal, when you are moving I am sure the air is not higher then the outside fresh air.

OK... if you say so, but I will disagree 100%.

There is no way that the air "under the hood" is the same as the air entering the motor compartment. With all the heat of the motor... it is hotter. Good luck and enjoy... just wanted to post that your assumption is just that and is flawed by every test, post, research and common sense rule we have ever been taught.

Arrow Oh no, not this again . . .

Beech is on his Soap box again regarding this mod,

I can't beleive this is such an issue, on a piece of plastic. Sooner or later this thread will start the issues back and forth . . .

carfull with this mod .... i dont know all the details but a guy was forced to either return his truck to stock where he had done the zoodad mod or his turbo was not going to be covered under warrenty. main reason i did not do this mod. it all depends on the dealer and the tech but becarfull.

Head over to the ZooDad WoW thread for some real entertainment!

It's not just your home town dealer that you have to contend with it's the dealer that you bring your truck to when out of town with an issue.

I do not believe this as the ZooDad mod would not affect turbo performance or safety. If the intake itself was modified, then yes.... but not from just the ZooDad mod (even though I will not do it).

Sounds like "...I heard from a friend that knew a friend, that had a friend... and was told this... and I do not know all the details..."

As long as the stock intake (filter and housing) are intact you are covered... the debate is whether or not the ZooDad mod really works and gives any better performance... in the real world... not just seat of the pants.

I have had this mod on my truck for over 60K miles and into different dealers for service. It is not an obvious mod and I have retained my stock housing and air horn so unless they get down and look into the grill they wouldn't notice it. I used trim paint to repaint the area after I did it so it looks factory. I did notice the last time I replaced my filter element that I had a small circle of dirt in center of the filter, but other than that I have seen nothing but good from this mod. The intake temp readings went down about 15 degrees from the stock reading during the 100 degree Texas summer heat from 40 to 70 mph.

That's a good piece of info that will help back up my research on the ZooDad mod and the aftermarket airboxes.
