Stock engines
the nations truck stop and the 61-66 forum.Jon is on the money, I suspect you have the stock 352 in your truck. They all become 390s on sale day. The only way to tell the difference is to measure the stroke. Banjopicker will be along shortly and can tell you how to do that.
Two engines were available in 65 240 I-6 and 352 V8.

I trust that "shortly" is not an aspersion cast my direction?
<grin>

JAWolf, I second the welcomes!
I also second the opinion that it is probably a 352. The 390 was available before '65, but only in cars. The 390 could be had as a dealer special installed option, but that was extremely rare. The 352 was replaced by the 360 in '68. The FE was not used after '69 or '70 in cars, and '76 was the last year for the FE in trucks.
The FE family of engines all look identical on the outside, so you have to do some internal measuring to figure the most common ones out. The easiest and first step is to measure the stroke to eliminate other possibilities.
Here's the easy way to check the stroke without removing the head. Get a straight 12 inch piece of white electrical house wire or coat hanger wire. Get a magic marker. Remove the number 1 spark plug. Turn the engine over until the timing mark is at TDC. Now, put the wire in the number 1 spark plug hole with the wire resting on the top of the piston. (Because the old timing dampers sometimes will slip, the timing marks may be off. Make sure the engine is at TDC in the Number 1 hole by rocking the crankshaft back a forth a bit. When the wire is as high as it will go, it is at TDC. Once you are sure it is at TDC, continue.) Make a mark on the wire even with the lip on the valve cover. Now rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees, until the wire is at its lowest point. Mark the wire again, at the lip, and measure the distance between the two marks.
Here are the specs: 3.98 is the stroke for the 410 and 428 engines; 3.78 is the stroke for the 390, 406 and 427 engines and 3.5 is the stroke for the 352 and 360 engines.<o></o>
Good luck, and again, Welcome to FTE!

And, I don't type THAT much. I do it the easy way. Type it up once, save it, and copy/paste the next time someone needs the same information.
