I have a 99 E450 box van w/V10 and 42K mi. and a 2001 Int. 4700 w/t444e engine w/ 138k mi. box truck. I carry from 1000-5000 lb in the box and tow a 10k travel trailer. Both in exc. cond. Both automatic. Which one would you sell ? I neede to sell one.
I'f sell both and get another PSD with a manual trans. But if you don't want something new and are deadset on an automatic, I'd say sell the gas and keep the diesel. Not to discount the 6.8L V-10 but I think the diesel engined international is better suited to be a long lasting workhorse. That's just me. Oh and if you do get a new truck, I'd steer clear of the 6.0L powerstroke for the time being at least until they've worked out all the kinks. My understanding is that they've had nothing but problems with it from the start and it's more trouble than it should be. The old 7.3 on the otherhand is tried and true and as you probably know, is the same as the Navistar International engine.
I would bet there is a considerable difference in performance with those 2 trucks, based on that i would think you already know the answer to your question.
The V10 is a great engine for sure, but loaded up heavy or bucking wind with a big box, diesel would be the only way to go,,not to mention mileage, engine life and etc. .!
These days engine longevity is about the same on gas or diesel. It all boils down to maintainance and use. If your loads are light and short trips the gasser will serve you better and the diesel will fetch more money.
If you drive fully loaded all the time, then the diesel is the one you want, the gasser will be VERY thirsty and slow.
I had a 99 V-10 F-250 and recently got a 2002 7.3 PSD F350. I tow pretty regularly a 31 foot fifth wheel that weighs in at about 9500 give or take...
The V10 would run on up the road at 70-80 but would only get 7.5mpg at best on 93 octane, and if I ran anything less...well lets say it would be gutless.....along with the tranny hunting for a gear to make it happy...
The 7.3 on the other hand pulls the same route all day long at 70 WITH the cruise on, which the V10 would not do and if I am cruising at 65 to 70, I have gotten up to 11.5 mpg. After shreading 2 trailer tires on one trip, an old ARCA team owner told me that speed kills tires and to keep them to 65 or less.. I run the cruise and when I hit the mountains around Asheville NC, I crest the mountain at 60 with the PSD and I had to slow down to 45ish with the V10. When I first got the PSD, Diesel was about 30 cents a gallon cheaper than gas but that has now changed. The V10 will set you back in the seat and is a demon smoking the tires off the line, where the PSD accelerates quickly with no wheel spin, but then it is a dually and the V10 was single rear wheel.....I liked the fact that oil changes are cheaper with the V10 but I really like the PSD.....an honest comparison side by side, and I would go with the PSD....the cab is quieter and better insulated I guess because of the added noise but it is a smooth operator and definitely fun to drive. My vote goes for the PSD....
