Question oil pressure and "engine " light

I just added a manual oil pressure gage and found my oil pressure normal, whatever that is. Startup after sitting a week is 45 psi at idle. After running about 10+ miles top pressure is 40/45 psi and idle is 15 psi. Now the question. I'm not using the original oil pressure sending unit or the gage in the dash. Now I'm getting the "engine" light all the time. Is the light on because the oil pressure gage is no longer being used? Or is somthing else to blame?

the cel is on because the oil pressure gauge has no reading, so it assumes there is a problem.

Just split the original oil connection with a Tee and put both the old and new sending units back in.

Too much instrumentation never hurts.

The truck is a 1987 F250 with a 6.9, auto trans and air. I thought it might be taking the idiot gage not being in the system that caused it. Thanks to everybody that answered this!!
