Hi, My engine seems to be ticking for some reason or other. I beleive it has done this since i bought it a month ago but cannot completely remember. I was ready to break out the feeler guage and adjust the rocker lash but then i learnt the engine has hydraulic lifters. The noise is really only noticeable at idle to light throttle and more of a nuisance than anything.
I'm not sure just where to go from here, There doesn't appear to be any exhaust leaks, could there be a bad lifter or pushrod? Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.
The truck is a '90 ranger extended cab, auto, 2wd.

How's your oil pressure? I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge hooked up to my 2.9 cold idle=60 psi, warm idle=40 psi . While driving stays around 60 psi. It only ticks for a second or two on a cold start. My motor has <30,000 though.
Hope this helps.
The oil pressure guage hasn't worked since i owned the truck. I just left it cause i had every intention to cut the resistor behind the cluster and install a 87- oil pressure switch ya know, to bypass that whole idiot guage thing. The truck has 140,000 kms. on it.
I was kinda thinking towards a lifter. I work in a heavy equipment shop, i should be able to scrounge up a stethescope. I hadn't thought of that trick until you mentioned it, thank-you.
