My local dealer has informed me I need a $1300 rear end rebuild for my 99 explorer. Am I asking for trouble pulling an axle from a junk yard and installing myself? And how do I confirm I have the right ratio, the door notes a D4 axle, but I can no ratio.
The rest of the rig is fine.
one of the bearing (unspecified and it no longer matters) failed and metal is everwhere. They are proposing replacing the axle bearings, pinion bearing, and the differential.
I found another thread that had the axle description: D4 is a 3.73 trakloc, which must be the 3L73 88 on the tag.
Now I have a new question.
I picked up a used 98 rear end 3 73 marked tag, my original was 3L73 trakloc D4 axle for a 99. When I turn the wheels, the original wheels go the same direction, the used go opposite. Do I have the right rear end?
