I have recently acquired a 1964 Ford, F-100, with 56,000 original miles, 292 Y block, two wheel drive, four on the floor, with very little body rust or damage. I had a couple of questions about this truck:
1. The engine burns an insane amount of oil due to bad rings, valve guides, etc. Is this motor worth the rebuild? Does any other motor mate to the tranny?
2. I have no idea what this old ford is worth. Any approx guesses?
John is right, the 292 is old tech, but great runners with gobs of torque, and reasonable gas mileage. Here in MI, the old trucks get stored for 4-5 months through the winter and the old 292s fire right up every spring and run better than the previous summer. Bolt in replacements are 272 and 312. If you can find a good running 312, your lucky, other than that rebuild your 292 and run it, you wont be disappointed. I cant say what your truck is worth, but they seem to be going up in value (as long as you dont wrap it around a tree).
Thanks for your replys! The pickup was my fathers, it got retired 15 years ago and got parked on the family farm. So i didn't pay anything for it. Not a bad deal. I plan now to overhual the 292. I want to do a good overhaul but still save some $. Any suggestions on upgrades for the motor? Where to order parts? Is this motor very difficult to rebuild?
For the first time in a long time, I saw an ad for a 292 with the manual trans for $400 and it was only a rebuilder. But even several years ago, finding 292 internal parts was getting tough and therefore expensive. As I recall, you could buy a new 302 from Ford for the cost of a quality rebuilt 292; but then the trans would have to be changed out. But you got a heck of a deal.
Worth being such a relative thing, around here in the midwest, the truck would probally bring $1500-$2000 if structurally sound, good bed, etc.. as is. A Cherry shortbed would sell alot faster here than a longbed..
