Just changed glow plugs yesterday, 6 out of 8 were bad. After changing them when I start the truck SES light stays on and seems to have a miss. I was extreamly careful with the valve cover gaskets and all connections. Took it to auto zone to have them scan it and nothing came up on their scanner, not sure where to go from here. Any ideas out there ?????????
Someone else will probally be able to answer this better but something to check for now would be the uvc harness inside the valve cover, i know they have a problem and also the wires going into the valve and inside the valve cover have a tendency to rub on other parts and short so check all the wiring. And autozone can't read the vehicle specific codes for our trucks so that is why nothing showed up. You can take it to a dealer and pay alot or if you know someone with a programer most of them can read the codes.
Took truck to shop and had it put on a diag. tester and the mech. said it is the #6 injector. Took it home and pulled drivers side VC and YEP, it had came unclipped. Clipped it back and put VC back on then thought I need to check so pulled VC off and now 2 injectors are unclipped, so I clipped them on and EVER SO CAREFULLY put VC back on, then pulled it off about a inch to look in and every thing fine so I buttoned it up. Took it for test drive and every thing fine in PSD land, WOOOOOO HOOOOO
If you try to do glow plugs be extra careful putting VC's back on. I think that ford sells some kind of retainers to keep this from happening, next time I will get them before starting this project. Total cost of this project was $110.00
inc. new Glow Plugs and diag test. Wonder what the dealership would have charged to do it. Not a bad job about 4.5 total hours inc. today
i have a project next week at school, where a guy from Welding is bringing in a powerstroke to change the glow plugs. i will remember to be careful with the valve covers.
You really need to check on the retainers to hold the clips on. I am sure someone here knows what they are really called. I dont think they are expensive and well worth putting on, any way good luck with the project.
