Lightning bolt and gear
Coat of arms also found on 1965/66 Galaxie LTD accessory hood ornament, 1965 Custom/Galaxie front fenders, 1965 Fairlane hood ornament, 1967 Fairlane grille emblem.
I knew they probably had to be more. All knew for sure was the 63 XL I owned had the crest in the hood latch and on the 64 models it had dissapeared. After 64 I really didn't know for sure.
The crest is on the side of the rear pillars of the better half's 64 Fairlane. It is roughly 6 inches wide and 1.5 inches tall. Picasa Web Albums - Mark - 1964 Ford Fai...
to bring back a very old topic, (that is very interesting). I now have the ability to re-create in vinyl form. I took a scan of the owners manual, and some come computer time with graphics, to create a logo of just the bolt and gear. I'm going to place one on the back window of my truck, and was wondering if anyone else would want one too? Here is the logo all finished up:

Let me know if you need one.

In 1968 Ford changed the chrome plated horn button and ring, both were now coated with a dull grey argent finish to reduce glare.
At the same time, Ford changed the lightning bolt/gear to the more recognizable blue oval...that first appeared on the 1928 Model A.
btw: Don't strip off that argent finish and expect to find chrome underneath, cuz you won't. Guess why I know this.

I curious about this too. I have a 62 unibody with an original 292 Y-block V8 and my hood emblem is the bolt and gear not the V8. I have no idea if my hood emlem is original. I thought maybe the 6cyl. had the bolt and the V8 obviously had the V8 emblem but in reading the thread it seemd that it was year specific or that there's no concensus.
The gear and lightning bolt does have a deeper meaning. The lightning bolt represents energy, the gear represents mechanical functional. The energy (lightning) is harnessed by the gear and used to fulfill a need. In other words energy is controlled and transformed into work.
It seems that this was the description of the gear and bolt first usage on both the hood and the horn button. Yes, it was introduced for the 50th but in seems like they just kept using it for the next 13 years on the trucks. Did its use stop in 66? Not sure on that.....
