Hi, my name is John. I'm new to this forum and stumbled accross it looking for some info. I have a '91 F-150 4x4, 302 w/AOD. I had my trans rebuild by a friend and when I reinstalled it I can't get it to shift into overdrive. From 1st to 2nd gear is a hard shift, 2nd to 3rd is smooth but shifts too early. I have been told that either the detent cable needs adjusting or the spring in the trans govenor is weak. Can any tell me how and where to adjust the detent cable or offer any suggestions. Pics off the detent cable location would greatly help. Thanks in advance for your insight......John
Sounds like your trans wasn't rebuilt properly.
Trannywork isn't something that just anyone can do...
If your belts weren't adjusted properly, it could explain the bad gear shifting.
There was always problems with the OD for the trucks with the OD button on the dash.
The detent cable they are talking about I belive will come off your throttle to let the tranny know if your applying fuel or letting off on the gas, thats the way it was on my tempo atleast.
I guess it's possible the rebuild is off, but the guy that did it is a tranny guy for a local Ford dealer here. This particular truck doesn't have a push button over drive, it's in the shift pattern on the column. I do know tha trans sat for about 2 months after rebuild before being reinstalled. As a result I did have to pull the govenor back out and sand it with a micro-fine sanding pad due to the aluminum oxidizing, causing the "piston"(?) in the govenor to stick and not float freely. This has definetley become a headache.
