Modulator. Need help fast!

Looking for a little advice from those of you who have replaced transmission modulators. I discovered tranny fluid in the vacuum line on my 92 shorty 3.0 so I went to Ford and bought a new modulator... My question is, How difficult is it to get the old one out? Any special tools or tricks that can speed things up? I plan to replace it tonight or tomorrow, so I need a response ASAP.
Thanks.

Its just bolted to the side of the tranny with a vacuum hose hooked into it be sure to check the hose for tranny fluid too.

No real tricks its a pretty straightforward job if the bolt is rusted on good then use some penetrating lube.

Thanks for the fast reply... I hope it goes as easily as you say.

Being in a salt use area I am concerned about corrosion making things difficult, hope Im wrong.

Thanks to all for the help. I got the job done last night and as I expected the modulator was rusted in place and was not easy to remove. I pryed, twisted, tapped etc. etc. until the pot portion broke off of the shaft, then I pryed, tapped, chiseled etc. etc. on the half inch of shaft that was left for about an hour then it finally broke free. I also had to lower the tranny in order to get better access to the damn thing. But Ill stop whining now, she's done.
Thanks again.

salted roads in Ontario?
if so, check your aluminium oil pan...salt eats them like Alien salia

try PB Blaster penetrating oil if you can get it up north or the old burning candle wax trick

good job on a tough repair

Are these the same on all years? If so, what is the part number?

That is obviously a part that malfunctions alot, considering the price!!

What were drivability signs of this going?

save lots of money at your local discount auto parts store...shop around
Motorcraft/Ford no longer makes parts....all outsourced

look for shift problems 1>2>3 and down especially under hard throttle....ATF oil in vacuum line to modulator

more problems on 3L because of no heat shield to protect it from being cooked by the cat. converter and exhaust...fashion a DIY shield from sheet aluminum
will last 10-20 years if ATF is changed every 30k and heat shield put in

Hi Warren1974:

Welcome to our FTE forum

Yes, that modulator does go out a lot, all because it sits right next to the Catalytic Converter.

It tends to fail more for the 3.0L since it is totally exposed. The 4.0L model has a heat shield on it so it does tend to last longer.
