I recently dropped a 302 into my 83 F-100. Was a 3.8V6. I have a C4 tranny and after I bolted it in and installed starter truck would not roll even in Nuetral. Sound like something was snagging near flywheel/torgue converter. I installed the flywheel with the weights facing engine block. So that the recess in flywheel would space it towards tranny, was this correct?? Also, could the starter be catching flywheel. Should I use a starter for 302 or 3.8 since the tranny was connected to 3.8. This is my first engine change so excuse the ignorance. Thanks
When you say the "truck would not roll" what do you mean? Does that mean the starter doesn't turn the engine over or the truck will not roll if you push it? Is there power getting to the starter? Any noise at all when you turn the key?
Well, when I first tried to start it. I would just get a click from the starter relay. Then, I tried to move the truck further into driveway by pushing it and even in nuetral the truck would not move, sounds like something in the bell housing was catching on something.
Sounds like 2 different problems. The C4 should allow the truck to be pushed in any gear but "Park". The torque converter would not couple at the speeds you are pushing even if it was in gear. Did there seem to be adequate clearance for the torque converter? you should have had to pull it up 1/8" or so with the bolts to the flex plate. It's been so long since I've had an engine out I don't remember which side the weights were on. Have you tried turning the engine over by hand with a socket and breaker bar on the harmonic balancer nut? If it won't turn, try it again with the starter removed.
Havent tried turning engine by hand yet. Will remove the starter after work today and see if that is what is snagging/catching. I used the flywheel that came with the 302 to keep the balance right, but used the torque converter that was in the C4. hope that was not a mistake.
