Any tips from you body savvy guys about R & R on the side hood emblems? She's a '64 and needs new plastic inserts but I have nightmares about screwing up a pretty good paint job in the process.
When I used to work as a painter's helper (several years ago), we used to inspect very carefully around emblems and if you see the paint that looks like it is painted onto the emblem, we'd very carefully take a razor blade and cut around the emblem. It keeps the paint from peeling up with the emblem. Same thing with the nuts under the emblem and around body mouldings.
Not familiar how the 64 emblem is secured to fender. On 65 emblem, which has 3 tapered tubular nuts that pinch the emblem mounting pegs as the emblem is pressed onto fender. If fender was painted while emblem was installed, likely residual paint and suggest take steps as terrypen noted. Objective is to try and get little daylight between fender and emblem starting at secure points, carefully, in small increments work around the emblem. Recently removed the emblems on 65 and used a stiff 2" putty knife, or something simular. Found flat, stiff, narrow bladed tool works best. Actually flat scewdriver works very well but then there is the possibilty of scratching paint. Don't think you want tool to be too flexible. May try using masking tape around perimeter of emblem, or at mounting points, before removing possibly reduce chance of paint chipping. Caution, never been successful bending the 'tabs' that secure plastic insert on the emblem, very brittle and tend to break off. If insert is not flexible enough to remove without bending tabs, suggest bend ever so slightly as few of the tabs as possible to remove the plastic insert.

Once again, the guys in the Slick Forum come through. Before I joined FTE, more than one job ended up with me saying "sheesh, I wish I'd had a practice truck to learn on".
Thanks again.
If ever go on occasional salvage yard shopping spee opportunity check out how items attached, or dismantled while browsing. Wet my feet removing couple extra sets 65 fender emblems, which have since been discontinued. If possible, I try and not damage item another Ford truck enthusiast can use. May keep eye out for items I have found are getting difficult to locate for 61-66, rear window, heater exhaust boot in decent condition, hoods, could go on and on, but just to name afew.
I'm with ya Lon on the sensitivetly of the side emblems and paint; I realize too late that 65 emblems are different than 66, which 66 side emblems are the only one's advertise from reproduction parts, I installed new 66 embelms on my 65 and then found a good pair of 65 emblems after paint; I'm sure I'll damage the paint trying to pry off the emblems. Let us know how successful you are and removing yours from your 64, I believe they mount the same as Dave mention for 65-66 styles. I guess I'll wait until next resto of my 65 to install the true emblems that belong on mine.
Boy will that be along time from now. Lesson learn everyday LOL...
Hold up, mentioned 'plastic inserts' on 'hood' emblems and I start going into long explanation on how to remove fender emblem. If that is the case, then the clips should be accessable from underside of hood. Believe couple different types, but suggest if compression type, and appear they are going to be difficult to remove, them cut them off perhaps with a pair of small wire cutters or something simular. Another type of retainer are threaded on and can be removed with socket or wrench. If don't see any threads would not twist until certain. Sorry about that, should read post first, not the first time. Hey recently given 'posting guru' status means I reach certain number of post, and not necessarily that I know a lot about truck, no where near guru status or catagory as banjo, Jonw, barry, and number of other knowledgeable FTE members.
