1993 Ford Aerostar problem
I was hoping I wasn't gonna have to post on this board this early. (just got van a few weeks ago). I just got back from an errand, and right after I left for the errand, I noticed a new problem that appears to be tranny related.
( If I cruise slowly, like 25mph or slower, it jumps out of gear for a sec then kicks back in (while foot is on pedal). it seems to only happen in 2nd gear so far. I took it on Friday to Brake Masters to have some maintenance work done, and one of them was the tranny maintenance where they pull off the tranny pan and replace the filter. This problem came up tonight. I plan on taking it back, but was wondering if there is anything I could check myself on it (other than the fluid, I already tried doing that, will it be as evident as oil dip stick?) I hope to god I don't need a tranny rebuild. I don't have 1/4 of the money for that job. I guess my question is that is there things that brake masters could have messed up on with a simple fluid and filter change that would cause this? or does this sound like a major tranny issue in the works? The van is the 4.0L E4WD extended version. It only has 47,700 miles on it. Thanks ahead of time for your help. Brandon

That's what I thought it was too the first few times. However, it feels as if it kicks into neutral for a few seconds instead of back into first. I'll check fluid in morning, it was dark out when I got home, so wasn't able to see well. Thanks for your help. I got my fingers crossed.
also, A4LD's do NOT like to be even slightly overful....check hot on level ground...best midway or toward bottom crosshatch
pull neoprene vacuum line off vacuum modulator on rt side of tranny....any tranny fluid leaking out, replace modulator
make sure heat shield is in place...overheat from exhaust will cause stiff rigid modulator diaphram and affect shifts
I was once low on fluid (due to the famous front seal) and she'd shift into neutral when I made full stops, but not while driving.
I went back to brake masters and they said fluid looked fine, and referred me to a tranny place. They said that the tranny pan was black from the oil. I went to Aamco instead, and the guy said that if the fluid was black, and they changed the fluid and it's slipping already, the tranny is done for. Said it would be $2000+ to fix. Said if the fluid was black, means it's burnt and the internal tranny parts are burnt too, and the new fluid will ruin the lining of them. He said i'm looking at being left stranded any time now. I've only got $500 and my credit sucks so i'm screwed. I dunno wtf to do from this point, do I save up and fix it or just get rid of it? All the fluids needed changing, it obviously has not been kept up for ages. Is it worth saving up for? or just get rid of it cuz I could be looking at major problems down the line? This really sucks. Thank you guys for your help, I had all those things checked and they were fine. I wish to god it was one of those things though. I dunno wtf to do anymore...

Just checking the fluid has nothing to do with checking if they left out the O-Ring under the filter.
What a great scam. Leave the O-Ring out and when it starts to slip or pops out of gear..........
"Oh it's shot, Needs a rebuild, $2500.00 to fix, Bla, Bla, Bla."
Before you sink more mony into it.
One, Drop the pan and check to see that the Filter was put on right with all the right parts.
Two, Check that you don't have a bad modulator.
I use to have one on a Mustang that the shift point was about 24-26mph. Drove me nuts driving through town at 25mph. Upshift, downshift, etc.
Lucky I found out it was adjustable and tweaked it to shift at 30mph. Fixed the problem.

The really good way - to swap a tranny to 5st, but if you dont loke to drive manual trannyes, it is not for you. My friend hates autos, I dont know why, he adviced me to swap, and I like 5st tranny! Runs faster, better MPG!
Then remove the filter (only one little bolt and pull it straight down, but keep your face away) and check to make sure both little stubs on the filter has an O ring on. Also fish around up the little holes where they mate. Sometimes, as the mechanic pulls the old filter off, the old O rings slip off the filter and remain in that little hole, interfering with the installation of the new filter.
You should be able to do all this in under an hour.
It's almost impossible for the tranny to go bad after only 47,700 miles, especially on a 4.0L tranny.
I just got back from a transmission shop a few friends recommended me to, and they are registered with the BBB. I had them check Brake Masters work and everything. They said the Orings looked fine, the band settings were fine. fluid level was fine. My problem is a mystery to them, they drove it and said it shifted fine for them. They said they seen some trannies be tempermental to new filters. If it gets any worse, i'm gonna take it back. They said they needed evidence of it before they go in, that if they just started taking it apart, it'd be pricy. I'm gonna keep an eye on it, and if it gets worse, gonna take it back and see. He said the person in front of me was having a similar problem, and turned out to be some engine sensor.
