There are several aftermarket namebrand replacements that are much stronger than stock. Also have nearly bulletproof u-joints. The EB D44 is shorter than most other applications and limited to it or major reconstruction shortening a D60. I will try to find some specific links.
Warn offers a really strong axle shaft in a 4340 alloy.
I am running Mosers in the front of mine and have had very good luck with them. All of the upgraded aftermarket axles will come with the larger 1/2 ton size ujoints.
As FTF said it the u joints themselves are just as important as the axles. I use non greasable Spicer brand joints. They are much stronger than the typical parts store cheapies and not having grease passages in them helps with strength.
For the ultimate ujoint upgrade, the CTM's and the Ox ujoints are hard to beat. They are expensive but well worth the money.
thanks for the help , im gonna get heavy dutie u joints and axles now and see how their hold up. cus sunday the u joint blew apart and tore the axle up on the drive side, but on the passenger side the axle just twisted off. And i had this happen 4 times and im tried of it breaking in the middle of the bog and loseing my front end .
well it depends on what you think a lot of fabrication is! i swapped a fullsize D60 under the front of my 72 and it didnt really take much. bought wedges from JBG as well as the C-bushings. had to make a 1/2" spacers (the axle diameter is larger than the EB axles'). and that was it aside from shavin the axle housing down and cleaning it up! i used the stock radius arms (even though the pass side is wristed) and they fit in the stock brackets!
