I have a 1995 F250 with the powerstroke diesel. It will spit out white smoke and will not start when it's cold unless I cycle the ignition key a couple of times. Should I replace the GPR and the controller?

Sounds like some of your glow plugs are not working. When you switch the truck on does the volt meter drop to approx. 9 volts and then jump up to approx. 14 volts? If so then your GPR is working. You can also switch on the truck and read the votage on the two large terminals (one will be constant hot and the other one hot only while the GPR is activated). You should be getting approx. 12-13 volts and after approx. 45 to 150 seconds it should shut off.

Do a search for post by tjbeggs. A while back he did a good post on ohming out the valve cover wiring to determine which of your glow pulgs are good.

You can also plug in the block heater to aid in cold weather start up.

No the voltage does not drop. I just replaced the gps and it seems to have made a difference.

You guys are going to love this one... The idiot who replaced the gpr in the past installed a universal solinoid (NOT EVEN A GPR)!!!.
