Back to the drawing board

I have a 1960 F-250 3/4 ton 4X4. It still has the original 292 w/ 4 speed. I have been trying to get it back on the road. To make a long story short, my cam is shot and a couple push rods got sucked down inside. I am trying to decide whether it's worth tearing that engine apart and redoing things, worrying about parts and availability,... or should I do what my friend says and just find a 302 engine/tranny combo and drop it in. My question is, if I do go with a 302 what mods do I have to make (mounts, driveline, etc.)??

thanks for the help!!

Unless you are capable of or willing to build/purchase all mounts for the new engine /tranny combo, I would try to repair the 292. If a swap is needed, I would try to swap in a FE (352,360,390) You could then use a bell housing and front mount from a F600 to match your tranny. Might have to use the flywheel too, can't remember that far back.

Parts are readily available to rebuild the 292 Y-block.

I'd go with a more modern engine like the 302 or 351 and an automatic. You will have to modify the engine and transmission mounts to make it fit but it's been done thousands of times by many. There are motor and transmission mount kits available to help you. The modern engines will run more efficiently, last longer since they are built to closer tolerances, be cheaper to rebuild if needed, easier to find parts for, and more highway friendly. You can keep your original rear.

Hmm, wonder what we went back to before there were drawing boards?
