ive got a 1978 f250 4x4 with an np205, dana44 front and dana60 rear... id like to go spools front and rear... its got power steering so that shouldnt be an issue, and tire wear shouldnt be a big deal if theyll just wear twice as fast... any issues other than what i mentioned? im going for absolute simplicity and durability :-)
For a spool in the rear, that should be fine, I have one, and don't have any problems. It chrips the tires around the corners alittle, but I just started cutting corner more to not wear out my tires to fast.
Now up front, well I was debating that one.... You can't really turn to easy with the spool, and it will heat up if not burn up your power steering kind of fast. You could just lock one hub, and be able to turn, but I didn't like that idea, so I got aussie locker.
Same as a lock right or quick lock. They lock up like a spool when you start spinning, but unlock and do a ratchet deal when you want to turn, unless you power through the turn, then it stays locked up. The aussie locker was about $150 off of ebay, and a spool cost just as much if not alittle more.
depending on the kind pof wheelin you wanna do i would consider doing a lincoln locker. you wouldnt have to setup gears or swap any parts out or anything. just pull the carrier out and weld the spiders to the carrier as well to each other. i have run this setup for about 4 years and have great success. i love the dependability (no wires/hoses/cables or move parts) and predicability. i will never go to a several hundred dollar locker that i then have to setup esp since i am running one tons, hydro assist steering, and trailered from trail to trail.
if you are not running 1 tons then i would suggest just lokcing the rear (either spool or weld). you'd be surprised what just one will do! if you arent runnin a 1 ton front i discourage any kind of fully locking locker b/c the joints and parts just cant take the stress. i guess if you are careful you could get away with it. also if you lock the front you will really need to add some kind of hydro assist system or you will be replacing steering boxes left and right!
i just laugh at all the guys i know around where i live b/c me and kubotaorange have been telling them for years to upgrade to stronger drivetrain but they just keep paying to fix their 1/2 ton parts!
