Changed radius arm bushings and alignment people say the camber bushings are maxed out. They suggested replacing coil springs to raise body so camber will come in. Does this sound reasonable?? Thanks in advance.
Yes, that is a reasonable diagnosis. Old springs can get weak and sag. When they sag, the front tires can end up tilited in (/--\). When this happens, replacing the springs is the correct approach.
I have the same problem. The guys told me I needed a camber caster kit. $60 per side, plus $44 to align it. Advanced Auto has them for $14.99 per side. Is it easy to replace these bolts and then have the shop align it?
If you are going to install your own make sure you get the correct kit, they come in designated degrees,
To replace them,
• Take note of the approx angle that the stud protrudes out of the adjuster.
• Undo the crown nut on the top ball joint and press it out,
• Now is the time to check the top ball joint and replace if it is questionable.
• Undo the pinch nut which holds the cam/cast adjuster, remove the cam/cast adjuster,
• Install the new one by reversing the procedure.
• Before tightening the pinch nut, rotate the adjuster until the angle resembles the attitude before you took it apart, you will at least be close on the cam/caster.
• Get it on the rack ASAP.
The problem with changning the camber bush yourself is not having the truck on an alignment rack to know what degrees bush it may need. If the alignment shop is kind enough to make a recommendation, maybe you can get away with it. It does suck they charge 1/2 per side per the book time...but it really only takes 5-10 minutes per side once the truck is set up and the tech has tools in hand. On mine, I changed all the ball joints and removed (obviously) and cleaned the camber bushes...so they slide right out for the tech...still charged me 1/2 hour labor!
