click, tick, ping

Well, i discovered a noise in my 6.6 400. It sounds like metal on metal, its a bad noise. It is significant only when i am accelerating or keeping a constant speed. I put the motor into nuetral when it was making the noise in drive and it went away, so this makes me think the motor only does this under load. It does seem like i can slightly hear it when reving the motor in park but it is a lot less. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas, thanks a lot.

first thing to do is find out which cylinder it is. you can pull the valve covers and check for bent/broken pushrods, valvesprings or a dropped valve. turn the engine through by hand or 15/16" socket on the crank bolt to let the rockers and springs cycle while you check them all out. turn a little, check em all, turn a little, check em all again. repeat until you are satisfied. this will not jepardize the engine by running it. pull all the spark plugs and see if any look funny haha. if nothing is obvious after a thorough look see, start it up and pull a plug wire at a time until you pull one and the noise stops. could be the fuel pump, which the noise will not stop by pulling plug wires. use a mechanics stethoscope, a piece of electrical conduit or a large screwdriver touching the engine and held to your ear. touch different areas and parts of the engine, you can hear amazing things going on in there! when's the last time you changed the oil? try putting some straight 40W oil in it and see if it quiets down.

If it does it under load it could be the timing is off. You might be hearing the octane ping under load. Erv

are you sure it's engine noise and not driveline? could be anything, broken engine mount and the fan hitting the shroud, cracked flexplate, yada yada yada...
