i was looking at my 86 ranger today while working in the yard, and thought man that cab would look alot sharper with out the drip caps over the doors. i have heard of ppl getting them shaved off. i know if you just take a cutting wheel to them it will leave about 1/2" gap. i have basic welding expirence and can do minor body work. but i wondering if this is something beyond me. i dont want to just hack up my truck. so i wondering if i should take it to a reputeable body shop and have it done there. have any of you done this, or know of some one (first hand, not the uncle's cousin's brother-in-law type thing) that has had it done?
the rolled metal flang over the doors where the roof meets the jams, ford took the two metals and pressed and rolled them into a u shape. as rain runs off the roof into the track (u shape) it then runs to the windshield or back of the cab. old chevy trucks had thes all the way around the roof line make it look like a big eye brow. ford just put them over the doors up till the mid 90s on the f150 and until 93 on the rangers.
Take it to the shop, nothing is more depressing than messing up your own truck, it can even cost you sleep at night. More so if your a perfectionest like I am. I have alot of decals on my truck, have replaced some of them as many as 3 times. I'll put them on, stand back and notice 1 is crooked slightly, or off center a hair, so i'll grab the heat gun, rip it off, and go get on the internet and order them again. For every 4 I put on, at least 1 gets replaced, some times twice. My wife say's nobody will notice that, she can't even tell, but I know, and I can tell, and thats all that matters, so good luck !!
I have done a couple of old 39/40 ford coups years ago. It really depends on you skill and equipment. Where the top and pillers meet, cut it away in sections , but leave enought to hold it together until you weld it back up. And that is another problem, the headliner cloth/pillar post plastic will be a problem if you try to braze it. If you had a tig you may be able to get by just pulling them back, depending on your equipment and skill. After that its just basic refinishing. And getting wet when you open the window at the fast food drive thru

the more i think about it, i think if i am to get it done i would have the pros do it. though it would be some time before it would be done as i have other things to do first and money is something i have to spend on a priority basis as i dont have much of it lol.
