For some reason the back up lights arnt comming on. i recently had to change the oil pan gasket, they were working before that i think, and now they are not. I did have a driver side tail light bulb blow out recently n replaced that, checked the driverside reverse bulb, it didnt look blown (not sure if they are wired so if one blows they both stop workin), thought fuse maybe but i know backups dont get their own private fuse. Im not sure what tranny i have but i checked the wires going to that n they all looked ok, as ok as they can look anyway, lol. to get oil pan off i did have to lift the engine high enough that it was pinning an engine part to the wiper motor. but i dont think it was high enough to bring the tranny up against the floor. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yes. Get the obvious things out of the way first. I don't have a fuse box diagram for a 96, but as the trucks get newer and newer, they have more and more fuses in them. And their labeling is not very intuitive as far as what goes to what. Also look under the hood. You may have a fuse box under there too.
as far as i can tell all the fuses are fine, didnt see any other banks of fuses except on left hand side of steering wheel in the cab....sorry for the delay, weather has been really crappy lately.

See if you can find the reverse switch on the tranny linkage. The wire going to the lights is black/pink I believe. If you have another color wire there, see if it has voltage on it with the key in run(the hot wire that feeds the switch).
I had an issue similar to this. My Reverse Lights stopped working as well as my Rear Defroster and Fuse #26 kept blowing.
I found this thread online and this fixed my problem. Hopefully it can help you.
If anyone ever has fuse 26 blow check the following. I had a bare wire where the shifter lever meets the steering column. After time the pulling on the shifter to get it into drive must have worn the wire through. There are three screws to remove the plastic shell around the column. There is a metal plate with a rubber groument you need to left up to see the wire at this pivot point. Fuse 26 controls backup lights, rear defrost, over drive and some part of the 4WD system.
