I have noticed over the last few months that my 2000 exp tach and speedo gauges go all the way over when I crank my engine. The tach goes to 6000 rpm and the speedo to 100mph they then return and set at their normal idle positions once the engine has started. All the other gauges go to their extremes and return also to their correct engine idle positions. This particularly happens when I have a slow crank. I am wondering if my battery is nearing time for replacement. The volt meter looks okay but its not digital. I think the battery is the original one. Anyone seen thsi happen. I have seen it with Pontiac Grand Prix and Bonnevilles, but I think that's a GM feature.
I have heard that just replacing the battery every 3 years is good maintenance and insurance you won't have any problems. I have a 2000 EB 4x4 with 68k miles. I replaced the battery at 35k and will replace it again just prior to this winter. I just put in a Sears, biggest I can get, it's only about $89, then I don't worry about it. Just wondering if everybody replaces batteries on a regular (long) interval. Six to seven years seems a little long; I've never been lucky enough to have a battery make it much past 4 years, but I guess it could happen.
I replace mine every 5 if it lasted that long. I have had good luck with Die Hard from sears. They seem to move batery's rather quickly and don't have old stock laying around.
You might also want to check out Kirkland batteries from Costco (if you have one in the area). They used the Diehard as their "target" battery when they spec'd the Kirkland battery. They tend to look for a market leader and then build a better mousetrap (so to speak, for ex.: the Kirkland battery has larger plates than the equiv. Diehard does) and offer it for less money. I used to use only Diehards until I found this out and now only use the Kirkland ones -- never had a problem with them and they are a great value!
