The 32 code is for the EGR Valve not being controlled properly. I don't have a 88 but the EGR valve should be on the passenger side of the enigne. A metal tube runs from the back exhaust manifold up into the EGR valve. You may want to buy a repair manual for your vehicle. The are usually under $20 and have lots of useful info. It would probably tell you even how to test the EGR valve. Your problem could be that the valve is covered with deposit and not working right of it may not be getting any vacuum. You would have to test each of them to see what is possibly wrong. You have to keep in mind that the EGR valve only works part of the time. When I say that I mean the motor has to warmed up. It has to be above an idle and usaully moving. So tracking down exactly what is wrong may take a little bit.

The 42 code has to do with your Exhaust Gas Oxygen sensor signal always rich. It could be bad or a wire may be bad also. Is the motor running rich.

Hope this help you out.

I have the repair manual but, unfortunately it doesn't specifically tell where the damn thing is! The metal tube from the exhaust clinches it though, thanks. There is a test and I'll do it today. It does make sense with the problems I'm having. It runs great when cold but as soon as it gets warm it misses especially in first and second gear. I think I'm going to go ahead and change the O2 senser as it looks to be 18 years old. Thanks ranger!
