I have a problem with my 77 F250 4x4 with a 460 auto. My kid had taken the truck to a buddy’s house and when he went to start it to come home it cranked the starter, never started , he shut of the ignition and took the key out of it and it still kept on cranking the starter. It burnt up the pos- neg and the cable to the starter and burnt a hole in the side of the battery. Well checkers warranted the battery to my surprise and I replaced the cables, none of the fuse links or any other wiring was burnt. When I start it now it starts right up but will not shut off with the key. I replaced the ignition switch and the same thing happens, it just keeps on running when I turn it off. The solenoid is an old one I had laying around, so it is not new. I have noticed that when I put the negative cable back on the battery the solenoid clicks a time or too and the seatbelt warning light is on in the dash cluster with the key in the off position. Any ideas? Thanks Bob
I agree. The solenoid may be jamming (seen it happen before). Check to see if any of the wiring going to the solenoid is hot with the key off. Could be a short in the wiring from the switch, too. Any time I have had starter issues in my Fords, my first guess is the solenoid, and it has always been the problem. But our wiring is getting pretty old, so anything goes.
Thanks I checked it out again yesterday before work and I have power to the coil nad the ing side of the siloinoid with the key off. I will look more today Thanks
Just Remove the little connector off of the S terminal.
If the solenoid is bad the starter will continue to crank.
If the starter stops cranking with engine running the problem is in the ignition circuit to the key. Most likely the iginition switch.
ie: still supplies power to S terminal with key off.
I have a similer thing happening to my 85 carb'd mustang GT. When you go to start it, the starter turns, but when you let go of the key, it keeps spinning. I initially thought it was the solenoid, so I replaced it, same hting is happeneing. Anyway, its got 4 wires attahced to it. Positive battery(Checked it it ohm'd out good) then on the same side, a green wire with a fuse link. I also suspected it, but I checked it out, and it ohmd out ok(No fuse links open). The other side has the starter wire, and then the small slide on wire that I assume comes from the ignition switch. Before I replaced the solenoid, it was reading closed even with the ignition switch wire off of it. I installed the new one, and it was open, then I go to start, starter doesnt shut off, so I pull off neg batt cable to get it to shut off. Now solenoid is reading closed again. I checked the ignition switch, and it isnt very old, and it "seems" ok which is to say it isnt falling apart.
I dont have a wireing diagram for this, but has ford changed the way they wire up these solenoids? As I have a FSM for my 92 f150. ANy help would be great.
So, put the battery on the charger and get it nice and charged. I will do that, as it is, it turns over pretty good, but the battery isnt "fully" charged. That isnt too difficult, however, the cheap relay issue could be a problem. The one I pulled out was an advance auto one, and so is the new one. Does napa have any better ones?
As far as the starter goes, if it is in the start position(bendix?) that can cause the relay to lock up also?

Nope..... two different things.
One is mechanical from not enough lubrication & corrosion and will "Fly Back" to its normal position. It just sits there and clanks with the flexplate/flywheel grinding away at it.
