Bench Vise recommendations

Beware of the kind with the rotational head. That is, the kind that turns on both the vertical and the horizontal axis. Try to get one that will have an extra lock for the horizontal axis. If you don't, you will find yourself having to crank way too hard on the main screw to keep it from moving while you are working on the item. That may mar the item with the teeth of the jaws form having to clamp too hard. I had one without an extra locking device (like the Chinese-made Wilton's at Lowe's-cheap vise but a good feature) and I regretted it. I do some sheet metal stuff and it really was tough on the workpiece.

Wilton makes a real nice vice in their tradesman series. Nice for the garage and precision work. As precise as a vice can be anyways. At the mill I work at as a millwright we use Record vises made by Irwin. They're a real good heavy duty vise that you can beat as hard as you want on and will not break. For my home shop I prefer the type that the jaws can pivot off to the side. I don't like the ones with the swivel base as I find it always comes loose. I find it to be the weak link on a vise.
