Why did it fail?

Can anyone give me a list of possible reasons in order of probability why the trans failed (no reverse, lots of metal when the pan was pulled) on my 2001 Navigator (4R100) considering the following:
83,000 miles, last serviced at 53,000 miles.
I am buying it used but lets say there was no abuse or off roading. The vehicle looks almost new inside and out, no mud or scratches underneath anywhere. No bullbar, stock wheels and tires, ect. I thought these were supposed to be pretty good trannys. Fortunately, the Ford dealer is paying for it, and the service manager says they use factory rebuilt trannys with a 36 month/36,000 mile warranty. Have any of you had any experience with this scenario?

Hitch?

Yes, it has the factory towing package which includes a tranny cooler. I understand why you ask this, but I don't know if it was used for towing. I rather doubt it since it was a corporate lease car, but don't really know. I've never seen a Navigator towing anything, however I do plan to tow a 7000 pound load, boat and trailer, a few times a year at most. My Seadoo is pretty light which is what I will tow most often. Thanks for your reply. Ed

Is the inside of the receiver scratched up and rusty? If it isn't you know the truck hasn't towed, but if it is it could just be from just a bike rack or something...

My friend's father had a Navi, and pulled with it a bit. They pull real good, I don't know why more people don't do it... (His might have been a corporate lease car, too, I'm not sure.)

Are they putting a Ford reman in or is the dealership fixing the problem? Many dealers replace only what absolutely needs to be replaced and not what should be replaced and call this a rebuild. The e4od/4r100 have some flaws, but if taken care of they can last. With any amount of metal in the pan, I would ask if they are replacing the aux. trans. cooler and back flushing the main radiator (some Ford vehicles do not use the main radiator, they only use an aux. cooler). If they don't you may be in the same boat again. The radiators tend to get plugged when components in the trans. start to come apart.

Thanks

Thats good advise about flushing the trans cooler or replacing it. I would hope this is part of the procedure, but I will definately ask about it.
It is suppose to be a Ford factory trans with a 36/36 warranty. This as the biggest dealership in the SF Bay Area, I hope they can get it right the first time.
I'm still wondering why it failed , if anybody has a clue, please post it.
