I was wondering if anyone knew Ford's procedure for changing the Fead Belt on a 2004 F-250 with the 6.0L. I had a squirrel get into my shroud the other day and now my belt is pretty frayed up.
I assume your talking about the accessory drive/fan belt. The routing should be on the radiator bulk head. I usually start by looping the belt over the crank and leave the alt for last sence it is the smallest. Then one hand on the belt near the alt and the other on the tensioner. If you can walk and chew gum, it's nearly the princable.
Yes, i am perfectly capable of changing the belt, but getting to it is the problem. Im not sure if your familiar with the drive belt on an f-250, but there is a shroud that covers the majority of the belt. When i talked to ford, they said they have a service bulletin that calls for cutting the shroud and then riveting it back on.
When we are talking $120 labor, plus a $60 belt, I'd kinda like to do it my self. What i was trying to ask was if anyone had ever had to cut the shroud, or any useful information.
Oh, and FEAD stands for Front End Accesory Drive, just for info...
My 5.4 F250 is much easier, however, if a dealership is getting $120 for it must be a 2 hour job for people who know how to do it.
Is it the fan shroud that covers the belt and it can't be removed with out pulling the rad bulk head? That sucks, what if someone had to do it on the side of the road? I would look for a way to modify or use another fan shroud. I hope some on can help you more than me. Good luck.
Supposedly, there is a "procedure" for cutting the shroud and riviting it back on. I think it is a poor ford design aimed at making the consumer come back to the dealer to get a seemingly easy task fixed by their techs at a premium rate. I like the days when you could get an old belt off and a new one on in less than 5 minutes, but thats just my opinion.
I would hate to know that if I attempted to cut my shroud and somehow didn't do it to Ford's spec, that they would deny me of any warranty work.
