Hello, I have been reading here about exhausts and I went ahead and cut my muffler off to see how it would sound. It sounded good for one trip to work but now I want some of the quiet back. Will adding the straight pipe and connecting back up to the tailpipe bring the quietness back some or atleast out the back and not in the cab so much? Thanks Robert
Regardless of what engine you have, a straight pipe is gonna still be just as loud.
Cut a few inches more off of the the existing pipe, go to the auto parts store, get a section of pipe that has an inside diameter that is EQUAL to the outside diameter of your existing pipe and also 4 clamps.
Cut the new pipe as needed, slide it and the muffler back on, clamp it and you'll be back in business. If you can weld, even better.
Its a 2000 7.3 6speed super duty. Just before I cut the pipe I installed the napa 6637 air filter. It doesnt sound bad other than a flutter type sound along with the turbo noise, actually it sounds good just alitttle to loud for me.
You're gonna probably want a nice high flow muffler. That should give your truck's exhaust the breathing room and quiet it down some. I personally have Magnaflows and I like them. Nice purr, excellent air flow with only a slight drone in the 40-50mph range.
