how hard, is it to remove the heads on a 7.3 idi turbo, and about how long dose it take? some said that a old glow plug could have broke off when some one changed them and is possible making the nosie i hear. the ticking sound. the darn prices on fixing these engines, i just can just buy parts and buy parts to try to figure it out. and is there anyone in NC that knows about these diesel engines
Depending on how rusty the turbo/exhaust is on the truck it could take all day and a whole can of WD-40. Not to mention the heads are extremely heavy, I use a cherry picker to pull them out.
Did the ticking show up just after a glow plug change? We had a strange one a few weeks ago. A 94 idi turbo came in with a tick. We loosened the injector lines and listened with a stethoscope. We narrowed it down to the front cyl on the drivers side. We pulled the glow plug out, expecting to see it burnt off, and nothing! It looked fine! We all shrugged and put it back in. Told the customer that it must be something more serious. He said OK, and fired it up to leave. The noise was gone! He was all smiles as he backed out. All we could figure was there was some carbon buildup around the plug that was making it pre-ignite? Not sure, but it was an easy fix. The guy hasn't come back either.
First isolate the cylinder, try cracking the injection lines 1/2 turn one at a time and see if there is one that makes no difference in the idle or if the noise goes away. There are numerous reasons for engine ticks from GP tips to bad exhaust manitold seals.......
Interesting about the glow plug. If you have seen some of my post, I have been trying to isolate a tick noise as well (hollow sound that moves with RPM). Why would a burnt off glow plug cause a tick? Is it the remnants in the chamber. Why would carbon build up cause a tick? These are things I hadn't considered in my diagnosis as I figured the glow plugs are doing thier job to start the truck and that's it. I'm just about to R&R my IP so the glow plugs are right there.
