Working on my First FE (360) and I picked up an extra 390 for $100, and I was looking at the block.
I have heard there is an X cast into the HD/high nodularity blocks, and I have heard there are ribs on the outside of some 390 blocks.
Soooo... the 390 has nothing on the outside (from a 70 XLT) and my 360 has the ribs... I checked the stroke and they are 360 and 390 respecively.
What's going on? I realize at this late stage of the game these may not be original or even correct crank/block matches, but do the different markings on the block mean anything?
TIA,
Eric

I have seen the "ribs" on all the 360's that I have had in the past, but not on any of the the other FE engines that I have or had. As far as meaning anything, I don't think so.
One of the best FE-FT block to rebuild is the "Mirror image 105" block. High nodularity and thick cylider walls...I've built several 428's out of them. The "105" is located where the"352" normaly is. Late in production, built as 330,360,361, 389,390,391.
Know of any pics online that I can look at? Be nice to know what I am looking for...
TIA,
Eric

Not all "105" blocks got thick walls. I've seen more with thin than thick. Only a sonic test will tell the truth. That goes for alll FE's as well.
