The Micky Mouse, afterthought intake blower (cooler) on my '87 f150 4.9 is starting to make noise. Any thoughts for a better replacement or at a least cheap fix?
The early 4.9's had a blower to cool the fuel rail and injectors after the engine was shut off.
I don't know much about these, but as far as replacement goes, I would think that a junkyard fan would be pretty cheap, but who knows how long that one will last or if it still works. How similar are those blowers to the one used for the HVAC system?
I don't see how I could be much more specific, perhaps you've never seen a 4.9 EFI, but I'll try; there is a small squirrel cage fan blowing into a duct surrounding the intake on a thermostat that runs on hot days to cool the intake manifold. The purpose of this is to an attempt to control vapor lock. It is marginally effective, but better than nothing. Perhaps not all of them had it, I've only seen southern 4.9s. I know UPS deleted them on the 4.9 EFI based delivery trucks, and lived to regret it. Every time it got over 100 degrees they started dropping & had to be towed in, they tried everything in the way of fuel additives, nothing worked.
Well.. I have seen lots of 4.9's but nothing equipped with said blower assembly.. maybe it is a southern thing as suggested. I would think the EGR contributes a lot of heat to the the intake.. blocking it should help.
