I have a 1990 f-150 automatic, and I was wondering how can I tell what kind of rear end gear ration is in there. And I was wondering if changing you gears is a diy project, if so would I use the stock shims in the rear end. thx
Welcome to FTE.
look on your differential cover bolts for a tag, it should have 2 lines on it configured like this
XXX-XX #XXX
#.## #.# XXX
The first line is illrelevant for what your wanting to know but the first 2 groups are an aplication code, and the last group of 4 is the build date
Second line is what your wanting to know, the first group is your gear ratio should be something like 3.73 or 3L73, if it has the L it's a limited slip if not then it's an open diff, the second group is the axle in your application it should probably have 8.8. The last group is just a plant code.
If you change the gear set you will have to reset the pinion depth and the lash and carrier preload this means changing shims. My own advice would be leave it to someone who has the tools and assortments of shims to set it up or you will be
unhappy with the noises you end up with.
I looked on the bolts and there was no writing on them maybe due to being 16 years old,but I did find a number on the side of the axle ETTW-4025-BA, or ETTW-4026-BA, or, ETTW-4026-8A,or, ETTW-4025-8A, its hard to tell aprt the 8 and the B and the 5 or the 6, what does this number mean, and can where can i find out what it means
thx
