Without knowing the loaded weight of your rear axle, I'd say go with the E rated tires. If you prefer the BFG's, take your loaded truck to a scale and find out the weight on your rear axle. Here are the #'s on the BFG.
LT285/70R17/D 3195lbs@65 psi.
Nitto #'s -3750lbs@80psi
If your rear axle isn't close to the combined weight( 6390lbs @ 65psi ) of the 2 tires, then get the BFG's. If it's too close for comfort, get the Nitto's. Terra Grapplers are great looking tires, so i don't think you'd be losing out either way in the looks category.
I've never run Nitto's so I can't say how they'll ride or wear. I know the BFG's wear good and last a long time. The Nitto's will probably be a little rougher if you ran them both at max pressure which I like to do when I'm loaded. Max Pressure= Less heat and better mileage.
I put 6000 lbs on my d"s all the time. You just have to watch the air pressure...I would just pick the tread you want and don't worry about D or E. Go to the tirerackdotcom and read reviews on tires.
What kind of off roading? BFG TA KO's dont like sticky mud (been there done that) they do like sand, ( Your profile says Cali, so I bet you got sand) I looked at the terra grapplers when they came out about 4 years ago and I didn't like em b/c they didn't have an OWL
I currently pull a 11.5k # fifth wheel in my99.5 F250SD 7.3PSD 4X4 CC SB with 305/70/16 D range Maxxis Buckshot Mudders, when I left the stock tires 200k ago i moved to a D range tire and have not looked back
My off roading is mostly desert, rarely see mud. But, last time I traveled through Death Valley in 1998 with my Toyota TRD, I managed 3 punctures to the (stock) tires. Slow leaks, so I made it to a repair shop. Is a load range E a tougher tire (more plys) than a load range D?
yes, the E Rated tire has more sidewall rigidity (10 plys vs 8 plys). when aired down will it perform as well as the D range in the sand? No. The question comes down to what do you do more of? Camping or Off roading, or do you Boondock with the camper and need the extra load compacity of the E rated tire to get you where youre going.
go to the truck stop have your truck weighed, you know what the tires will carry that you are looking at. Do the math, if the BFG will handle the load AND YOU LIKE IT MORE then save the 32.00 and get em. If you like the Nitto better then get it, they're only 32.00 more (less than 1/2 tank of diesel).
