Hey Wendell

Did Doug's chip take care of that prolonged high idle that Ford instilled on late model 4.0's? And if not, do you know if he can cure this or is it emission crap that he cannot legally alter?

Same question here that got asked in the earlier email that was inadventantly deleted.

If the answer isn't known, that's ok too.

Yeah, it's a bummer noy being able to pm, or get them, I may have to have the geek squad come out and have a look at my pc. I haven't noticed a high idle on my 04 4.0, only at start up, then once it is warmed up, it idles fine. The intake raised the idle alittle, but the bama brought it back down to normal. Mine is a manual tranny, I think the idle is set different from auto to manual, don't quote me on that. To answer your question with out all this BS, yes the programer can change your idle speed, just let Doug, or Bob Jusnes know what you want out of the program. I know people who did cam swaps that needed the idle raised to take some of the vibration out of the car, it was done with the tune on the programer. Just about any function on a car that the computer controls, the programer can be tuned to alter.

Thanks for the heads up, but the idle I'm talking about is a prolonged high idle. Ford does this for emissions reasons, I can email you and fill you in with more details if desired and it's normal operation on the late model 4.0's. But the end result is that not only when it's cold is the high idle a bit prolonged but even on a warm engine, say you drive, shut it down for 10 minutes, then restart you get some prolonged (maybe 15 sec but I'd have to time it) high idle. I really don't wanna drop it into gear at 1,500 rpm and the wait is a bit irritating. Back in the old days, 1994, that Ranger ran like a vehicle with a carb as far as choke and fast idle were concerned. Once it was warm, no fast idle until it cooled down.

I have never really noticed on mine, but when I drive to work tomarrow I'll pay more attention to the tach, and report back where my 4.0 is at cold, and warm. Then we'll compare notes.

"SORRY" Billy, I forgot about this post, so I went out and did a test drive just for you. When cold, she idled at 1,100 rpm, when she warmed up, she fell back tp 900 rpm's, this felt perfect to me. I do have the bama tune installed, but it didn't seem any different before bama, at least wise I never noticed. If I would of had a high idle, I'm sure I would of noticed. Now as far as prolonged high idle, the idle dropped as soon as the engine started to warm, not long at all, a couple of minutes maybe, but it's pretty warm out side today as well. "Now", let me ask you, what is your idle when cold, verses hot, and how lond does it take for your idle to start falling back ? Cause mine seems to operate normal, there's nothing odd about it, operates the same on my 3.7 in the jeep liberty, and the 2.3 in my focus st. Of course the 4 cylinder carries a higher idle than the v6's by it's nature of being a 4 cylinder, but nothing out of the ordenary. I see your ranger is an 04 like mine, so how long does it take for your high idle to kick off ? I wish I could tell you that bama fixed it, but on mine there doesn't seem to be anything to fix.
