This my first diesel, so I could use a little help on where best to invest my money. What do you guys think the first performance upgrades are that I should consider getting. I was thinking a new exhaust system would be the place to start, am I right in considering that. A cat back system is what I was looking at.
The exhaust system is the place to start. You dont want to add too much heat (power) without being able to get rid of it (heat). Then I would add a set of gauges or a digital monitoring system....Quadzilla Commander, TS Headsup Display. If budget permits you can do the power and monitoring system together like the Edge Juice with Attitude, Quadzilla module and Commander, Banks Six Gun and Power PDA, something like that. These types are modules and you can controll power levels on the fly with the digital monitoring system. If you wanted a tuner that plugs into the OBDII port (tune the truck then put programmer away) you could go with gauges or the Quadzilla Commander digital display that will work as a stand alone gauge. When you do start to add power, you really should have some way of monitoring what is going on before you hurt something. There are many options for the 6.0L, so do some reaserch and figure out what features are important to you. If you called us or one of the many supporting vendors of this site we (or they) can discuss what might suit you best.
turbo back Exhaust, SCT tuner--save the airbox money for more mods or better SCT programs. Whiskeywagon just ran a 414/716 on a stock air box and fuel system--just tuning.
If you do go with a handheld tuner, a custom like the ones we sell from Innovative Diesel scream. If you go with a module the Quadzilla 160hp is very nice. Plus with the Commander you can adjust on the fly.
You know, allot depends of what you want to do with the truck. Regaurdless of intentions, the exhaust is the first thing to upgrade. After that, what are you looking for? Gauges are a must for any kind of performance driving situations (racing, dragging, heavy pulling...) You need those before you can safely utilize a performance tune. That tune is what's really up in the air. There are shift on the fly-self monitored systems all the way to single tunes. What are you looking to do? I will suggest a self monitored system for extreme driving purposes. This type of system automatically backs itself off when your engine approaches red line conditions. I feel it's worth the money. Edge with attitude, banks with pda.....that kind of thing. Keep in mind though, if you buy banks, you pay allot!!! Another thing to consider...how long to you plan to keep the truck? A two year relationship before a trade is very different than a 15 year marrage. Just some things to keep in mind.
